The SYNBIOTIC research project aims at developing formalisms and computer tools which makes possible the specification of a global spatial behavior and its automatic compilation through a tower of intermediate languages into local cellular regulation processes (genetic, metabolic and signalization regulation). The final purpose is to enable the utilization of the collective properties of a bacterial population in order to create artificial bio systems meeting various requirements in different fields: health, nanotechnologies, energy and chemistry.
SYNBIOTIC is part of the field of unconventional programming systems and of the analysis of dynamic systems properties, between computing and biological engineering. It is based on the progresses made in synthetic biology, in modeling and in the simulation of complex biological processes. SYNBIOTIC is also based on the development of new programming approaches which makes it possible to deal with new classes of application characterized by the emergence of a new global behavior in large population of irregularly and dynamically connected entities (amorphous computing and autonomic computing).
